Kathmandu Pokhara Lumbini - 8 days
Tour of Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and Lumbini

Kathmandu valley is the historical center of Nepal and the place where kingdoms rose and fell, palaces and temples were built and rebuilt, and Nepalese art and culture were developed and refined is equally religious. Kathmandu valley is situated at an elevation of 1300 meters above sea level and is proud of its magnificent location, while the surrounding hills range from 1500 meters to 2800 meters. It is surrounded all around by lush green rolling hills with beautiful sights of the Himalayan panorama on the north. Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishanker and Everest are visible from different points in the valley.

The city contains more architectural marvels in a square mile than any other city in the world endowed with very ancient, unique, unrivalled art and culture. The Kathmandu city and twin medieval cities Bhaktapur and Lalitpur make up the Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu valley has been called on big museum - a vast store of Hindu and Buddhist art with more shrines and temples per square km than anywhere else in the world. Nepalese culture has immense vitality and countless festivals are celebrated each year. An institution such as the ''Living Goddess'' forms a direct link between the past and the present. The valley is above 25 km from east to west and 20 km from north to south with an area of 570 square km.

Patan situated across the Bagmati River to the south of Kathmandu is known to this day for its excellent works of art and carving in wood and bronze. Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaon, is the most medieval of the lot and is situated in the eastern part of the valley. While Kathmandu and Patan have undergone great changes in the three decades since Nepal its isolation, Bhaktapur has changed much less.

It was because of the following seven monument zones that Kathmandu valley was inscribed as a world heritage site in 1979 by UNESCO: Kathmandu Durbar Square; Patan Durbar Square; Bhaktapur Durbar Square; Pashupatinath Temple; Bouddhanath stupa; Swayambhunath stupa and Changu Narayan temple.

Pokhara valley (827 meters) lies in 200 Kilometers west of Kathmandu valley. The valley is the most popular touristic destination in Nepal after Kathmandu. This city became the most interesting especially when explorers found that it is the only valley in the world from where one can see snowcapped mountains higher than 8000 meters from below 1000 meters. These mountains lie in about 25 to 35 kilometers areal distance. This valley is the most famous trekking starting gateway for world famous trekking areas such as to Fishtail, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri area.

It is known as the most beautiful tourist valley of Nepal. Fewa Lake Side area,  boating experience in Fewa lake, Barahi Temple, Devi's Fall (Patale Chhango), Gupteshwor Gupha, Sarangkot, Bindhyabasini temple, Mahendra Gupha, International Mountain Museum,  Gorkha (Gurung museum, Tibetan monastery are some of famous place to visit in Pokhara.

The crystal clear reflection of snowcapped mountains on the lake really makes the city unique and adds more features to make the city more attractive.

Lumbini, is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas in modern Nepal. In the Buddha's time, Lumbini was a beautiful garden full of green and shady Sal trees (Shorea). The garden and its tranquil environs were owned by both the Asoka pillarkyas and Kolias clans. King Suddhodan, father of Gautama Buddha was of the Shakya dynasty belonging to the Kshatriya or the warrior caste. Maya Devi, his mother, gave birth to the child on her way to her parent's home in Devadaha while taking rest in Lumbini under a sal tree in the year 642 B.C. The beauty of Lumbini is described in Pali and Sanskrit literature. Maya Devi it is said was spellbound to see the natural grandeur of Lumbini. While she was standing, she felt labor pains and catching hold of a drooping branch of a Sal tree, the baby, the future Buddha, was born.

The bas relief above depicts Maya Devi with her right hand holding on to a branch of a sal tree with a newborn child standing upright on a lotus petal, shedding an oval halo, around his head, while two celestial figures pour water and lotuses from vessels of heaven as indicated by the delineation of clouds. This nativity scene was installed by Malla Kings of the Naga dynasty from about the 11th to 15th Century in the Karnali zone of Nepal.

In 249 BC, when the Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini it was a flourishing village. Ashoka constructed four stupas and a stone pillar with a figure of a horse on top. The stone pillar bears an inscription which, in English translation, runs as follows: "Beloved of Devas; King Piyadasi (Ashoka), in the 20 year of the coronation, himself made a royal visit, Buddha Sakyamuni having been born here, a stone railing was built and a stone pillar erected to the Bhagavan having been born here, Lumbini village was taxed reduced and entitled to the eight part (only)".
